1875 Henry Noakes Story Line

We now know by Vicki that 1904 Thomas Noakes visited Barrack Street and met with all her mothers siblings, including 1904 Thomas Noakes.  It is understood by Vicki  that 1904 Thomas turned up out of the blue and met with everyone, which may be why why Anne recalls 1904 Thomas only meeting his parents once.

1917 Alice and 1904 Thomas (Tommy) stayed in touch and 1917 Alice and 1914 James Whitchurst came down to Kent in the 70's on holidays

1904 Thomas mentioned that he had spent some time in Canada and I need to investegate this.  It is known that he also came back to Barrack Street for short visits when 1917 Alice was growing up , they got on very well and went out on bike rides together.

1917 Alice and 1914 James Whitcrust met when 1914 James was stationed at the (Army) Barracks close by and 1914 James 1904 Thomas (Tom) when he visited Norwich.

Henry's birth certificate GRO download can be seen above.  He was born at 2 Emery Place.  There are references to Emery Place being by Butler Street, London.  However, the recent research on this shows the information in the screen shots below.  This is still being researched.

1875 Henry Census and documents often refer to him being born in Canning Tow and it can sometimes be seen spelt incorrectly.  One incorrect version is Cunnigton, so I suspect this is how me pronounces the word when he talks to people about where he was born.

1854 Henry Robert Noakes - Engine fitter / labourer (Born in Box Hill Sussex),

1854 Ann / Annie - McGee / Roberts (Note:  There is a story in this area that I will cover at a later date, to do with GRO downloads, and the home address and maiden name of mother and othr chidren found on the GRO database) - Born in Hull, Yorkshire

Brother Albert Edward Noakes (aged 4 at school) - born 01 Jul 1876 at 5 Hayfield Buildings (Mother seen as Ann Roberts on his GRO - His father 1854 Henry is seen as a Stoker on his GRO download, which fits with his profession at the time of an engine fitter - birth registered 25 July 1876)

Brother Frederick George Noakes (aged 3 at home) - born 10 March 1878 at 2 Herts Terrace, Poplar.  Mother is seen as Annie Roberts.  His father 1854 Henry is now seen as a Marine Engineer.  He was registered on 16 April 1878

Brother Walter Thomas Noakes (aged 1 at home) - Born 02 February 1880.  Mother is seen as Annie Roberts.  His father 1854 Henry is now a Engine Driver.  The birth was registered on 02 March 1880 and they live at 11 Samuda Street

1896 Henry Noakes Time Line.

1896 Henry Noakes married Margaret Ann Story on 29 March 1896 at St James The Great, Bethnal Green, London, England

1896 On 01st Dec 1896, son Henry Robert Noakes was born

1896 On 11 Dec 1896, son Henry Robert Noakes dies

1899 On 14 Apr 1899, 1875 Henry joins the Navy and is based in Chatham, Kent.  His first ship is listed as Pembrook II.  However, this was actually the Barracks in Chatham and not a physical ship.

1900 With Frederick William Noakes being born (below) in September 1900, I assume 1875 Henry travels back home from Chatham Navy Barracks London and sleeps with his wife Margaret Storey.  Maybe before he departs for his sea voyages.

1901 On 31 March / 01 April, 1875 Henry can be seen on the 1901 census with someone called Rose Noakes.  I have carried out extensive research on other 1901 Rose / Rosetta Page / Cockman people and am sure that this is 1882 Rosetta Page / Cockman.  1875 Henry Noakes birth place is listed as Canning Town, Essex, which is correct.  However 1882 Rosetta Page / Cockmans is also seen as Canning Town.  People added different birth locations all the time and it is lickley they just added Canning Town for bother of them in my opinion.  His birth date is now seen as "abt 1877".  Rose is seen as "abt 1880".  They live at a Lodging House, 119 Brook, Chatham, Medway, Kent.  The Navy base is about 10 minutes walk from this location.

OUTSTANDING 1: - Research further how they may have met.  Fidn common ground.

OUTSTANDING 2: - Find Census for Margaret.  No Census information can be found at present on where Maragret (Story) was in the 31 March / 01 April 1901 Census.  I speculate she is with another family (Her Storey family)

Outstanding3:  I have no DNA links in this tree branch at present (Margaret Story Noakes children).  Once DNA matches appear (Assuming a member of her family do a DNA test in the future), if I have them in my tree and you do not have them in yours, I would speculate that 1917 Alice was not born via Henry Noakes

1901 On 13 May 1901, Frederick William George Noakes is born in Cubbit Town, Poplar

1902 On 26 Jul 1902, Frederick William George Noakes dies in Chatham Avenue (London?) aged 14 months.  He is seen to be the son of Henry Robert Noakes (a labourer) and he dies from Tuberculosis and Menigitis.  An inquest on the death was held and the death was registered on 31 July 1902

1902 The Navy record below shows he was on the "run" (deserted) on 23 March 1902 and was caught on 22 October 1902.  His twins below were born in June 1903.  Taking their births into account and 9 months pregnancy, this places 1875 Henry with his first wife Margaret when he was on the run in October 1902.

1903 (TWINS) On 11 June 1903, at 4.15PM Rose Hannah Noakes is born.  At 4.35pm Emma Maud Emma Noakes is born - (MOTHER - STORY formerly of 59 Lawrence Street, Canning Town). Henry Robert Noakes is listed as a Stoker in the Royal Navy. Rose is born at Union Workhouse and the family also lives here.

Navy Information and Summary 14 Apr 1899

I had a question in the early days asking if Anne and I may actually be born from 1875 Henry Noakes and reviewed the time line and dates that he served on the ships below and can see that he was at home at the time the children were conceived, when he was in the Navy and until 1909

You will note at the bottom of the document his Run days and when we was recaptured.  When he ran on 23 March in 1902, he was recovered on 22 Oct 1902 and sent to a Work House for 42 days

When he ran on 01^st August 1909, he was serving on the ship called Pegasus.  Although there is no mention of his re-capture, I do have more information on this somewhere else in one of my many spread sheets (UPDATE TO FOLLOW)

1911 Census

1875 Henry is back home and in Portsmouth (39 Price George St Portsea, Hampshire, England.  Although he had signed up for 12 years in the Navy, he is now seen to be a Hawker

My speculation is that he got caught in Australia and came back home on the Pegasus.

Henry is seen to be born in Cunninton (Canning Town) and Rose now mentions her birth location as Herts Ward, which would not be correct

1908 - Arthur William Noakes is born on 03 January 1908.  The address is, The Lodge, Bowthorpe Road, Higham, Norwich. The father is seen as Henry Noakes - a bricklayers labourer. Mother is seen as Rose Noakes (Formerly Cockman) of St James. Rose signs her name with an X. Registered 24 Jan 1908 (See GRO download above)  The Lodge was a Workhouse in Norwich and I will cover this under Arthurs profile https://www.workhouses.org.uk/Norwich/

1910 - Rose Mary Noakes is born.  The address location is shown as Orsett Lodge, Orsett. The father is seen as Henry Noakes - a general labourer. Mother is seen as Rose Noakes (Formerly Cockman) from Grays. Rosetta signs her name with an X. 1905 On 21 April 1905, Bertie Frederick Noakes is born at The Red house, Buleamh-eum, Blythbwigh Rd (A workhouse) . His father 1875 Henry is seen as a travelling musician. 1882 Rosetta is seen as Rose Cockman and Rose marks her signature with an X. The birth was registered 01 May 1905 - https://www.workhouses.org.uk/Blything/

1906 On 12 November 1906 Bertie Frederick Noakes dies, aged 18 months. The family have now moved to 54 Kibes Lane. 1875 Henry is seen as a steel musician. 1882 Rosetta May Noakes was present at death. Bertie dies from Acute Bronchitis.

1908 On 03 January 1908 Arthur William Noakes is born.  the address is The Lodge, Bowthorpe Road, Higham, Norwich (A workhouse) . 1875 Henry Noakes is a bricklayers labourer.  Rosetta is seen as (Formerly Cockman) of St James. 1910 On 27 May 1910, Rose Mary Noakes is born at Orsett Lodge, Orsett (A workhouse) . The father is seen as 1875 Henry Noakes and he is a general labourer. 1913 On 03 May 1913, Edith Ethal May Noake is born at Orsett Lodge, Orsett. (A Workhouse) The father is seen as 1875 Henry Noakes and he is now a farm labourer from Grays. 1916 On 04 Janury 1916, Beatrice Ellen is born.  She has no fathers name on her birth certificate. Her home address is 15 Green Yard, Barrack Street, Norwich.   Her mother is seen as Rose  Cockman and she is seen as a housekeeper and the comment "not domestic". The birth is registered on 19th January 1916.  Note:  Beatrice is baptised on 31 May 1916 St James with Pockthorpe, Norwich and parents are listed as Henry and Rose Noakes

1917 On 02 October 1917, Alice Florence Maud is born.  the address is, 15 Green Yard, Barrack Street, Norwich. No fathers name is mentioned on the birth certificate. Her mother is seen as Rose Cockman and is listed as a housekeeper and the comment "not domestic". The birth was registered on 05 Oct 1917.  Alice is baptised on 10 May 1918 at St James with Pockthorpe, Norwich and parents seen as Henry and Rose Noakes and Henry is listed as Serving with HMF (His Majesty Forces)

1918 On 17 September 1918, Henry Noakes marries Rose Cockman.  He is listed as a bachelor.  Although he was married before.  His 1st wife dies in 1967 (Margaret Storey - No DNA matches foudn on this tree branch at present, but I have not looked very much at the moment)

1919 On 29 July 1919 Ivy Kate Noakes. is born at 15 Green Yard, Barrack Street, Norwich. Father is seen as 1875 Henry Noakes (Labourer 129th Company - Army service number 77072 - general hawker). Mother is Rose / Rosa formerly Cockman

1920 On 25 April 1920, Kate Ivy Noakes dies, aged 9 months old. The address is 15 Green Yard, Barrack Street, Norwich. 1875 Henry Noakes is listed as (Ex army) general labourer. Mother is seen as Rose / Rosa Noakes. Kate dies from measles and pneumonia

1921 On 23 January 1921 Lucy Edna Noakes is born.  The address is 15 Green Yard, Barrack Street, Norwich. Father is seen as 1875 Henry Noakes (Ex army) general labourer. Mother is Rose / Rosa formerly Cockman

This is the last time 1875 Henry Noakes was last seen in the

1875 Henry Noakes and 1882 Rosetta Page / Cockman do not marry until 1918.  Any  children prior to this date are born out of wedlock.

In 1921 Henry can be seen living at 15 Green Yard, Barrack Street, Norwich, Norfolk, England.  He is seen to be an "out of work labourer" Notting Semi Army

He is living with his wife 1882 Rose (Page / Cockman), 1908 Arthur, 1910 Rose Mary, 1913 Edith Ethal May, 1916 Beatrice E, 1917 Alice Florence Maud, 1921 Lucy Edna.  See above for birth certificate
